The sixth day of January 2007 ushered in a great day in the life of ex-students of Bangla School. The School premises warmed up in the evening. It was a great sight to see member after member arrive dressed at their Saturday best, looking gorgeous, smile on their lips, a spring in their stride, with poise grace and dignity above all an aura of friendliness which can only be reserved for such occasions. The graying seniors and effervescent juniors greeted each other with heart warming smile and exchanged pleasantries which is deeply embedded in their psyche having been nurtured and brought up in Bangla School. Ex-students ranging from 1948 batch ( Sri Samir Sen or Nabelda  ) to 2000 batch ( Sri Soumya Pal ) rose to the occasions and as if touched by a magic wand managed and participated in the evenings program with zeal and enthusiasm.

Shri Dileep Chatterjee called the proceedings to order with the arrival of our Chief Guest of the evening -our beloved teacher and  retired  Principal  Ms Nalina Nayak. After a brief welcome address, the gathering was called upon to observe one minute silence in honour of the departed alumni souls who are no more with us. Dileep tearfully remembered Smt. Ella Bhattacharya who had been one of the guiding spirits of the ALUMNIBES movement since its inception in November 2005. Our  very own Ghazal Queen  Chhaya Ganguly rendered her melodies with Tagore`s “Aagun er parash moni chhoaon  praane ….. E jeeban purno karo"  followed by a Bhakti Geet in Bangla and  concluded with her President`s Medal winning song from the film Gaban…. “Yaad aati rahi….raat bhar".

Remembering the wonderful experience of the association with Nalinadi over the years in Bangla School, Dileep reminded us that in our lives, the roles played by our Teachers and especially the dedicated, sincere and loving care of  teachers like Nalinadi were most memorable. The role of  dedicated teachers like Nalinadi in molding a student’s character will always be remembered with highest regard.

An over whelmed and emotionally choked  Nalinadi  thanked everybody present  for the shower of love and affection and said that she always enjoyed her association with the School, her students and colleagues all thru` the forty years of her service and treasured such memories.

Shri Samir Sen – the third son of Late Smt and Shri Biren Sen ( the founders of the School )  and also the senior most alumnus present for this evening  honored Nalinadi by handing over the Bouquet of Flowers amidst standing ovation and thunderous applause from all 100 plus gathering.

The second part of the program was started by honoring the most outstanding student of our School, Shri Bimal Basak. Bimalda is the only Merit ranker in SSCE Board from Bangla School in its 74 years history who stood 11th in

Maharastra and stood First  in whole of city of Mumbai.  Dileep paid rich tributes to the outstanding career of Bimalda helping our country witness the Telecommunication revolution by his pioneering and path breaking contributions with Telecom Giants viz. MTNL, TCIL, Tata Tele Services and TCS.

The other members of Basak family S/Shri Kamal Basak, Chhaya Basak and Amal Basak were also fondly remembered for their contributions to the School, Monimela and other cultural activities of the Bengali Community of Bombay.

Shri Samir (Noble) Sen in his address recalled how his father Late Shri Biren Sen had been moved to tears of joy upon hearing the achievement of Bimal Basak at the Board examination.

Sri Bimal Basak thanking  ALUMNIBES for this evening  ecstatically remembered how the healthy competition between her class-topper Meera Chatterjee ( Banerjee) and himself prompted him to put all his determination, efforts, concentration and hard work to achieve this feat for the only time in his school life!

Bimalda also narrated how our school Head Master Sri G.C.Pain proudly escorted him to the St.Xaviers College and arranged the admission formalities. Bimalda regretted that his marks in Bengali Language paper ( a miserly 72% and yet highest in the Board Exam! ) was responsible for denying him a rank in the Top 5 of the Board! Bimalda was very happy to see his school classmates Meeradi, Preetidi, Kamaladi and Meenadi  displaying their affection by coming all the way from far off places to attend this evening’s  program and make him feel at home.

The presentation of Bouquet to honor Bimalda was performed by the one and only Meeradi --the competitor and main inspiration for Bimalda`s  achievement .

Next it was the turn of  honoring another outstanding ex-student achiever in the field of Journalism who has been awarded President`s National award ( Swarna Kamal) for her book ‘Parama and other outsiders The Cinema of Aparna Sen’ in the year 2004. Shomadi is a prolific writer on Cinema, Television and Gender Studies. She also won The Best Critic Award in the year 1991.

A beaming Shomadi expressing her gratitude to the ALUMNIBES  for this honor narrated the events leading to her present Journalist status…starting from  Nalinadi’s  motivations, her parents` constant encouragements, her classmates` funny and critical comments, her husband’s  support, her in-laws` strict orthodox attitude and her children’s Love and affection.

Most notable amongst Shomadi`s statements were

" No one can underestimate a person without his/her own consent"

“ Any aspiring student of literature/journalism must cultivate the habit of writing a minimum of 500 words every day”

“ For a  person with self confidence  and willing to strive hard  no obstacle is un-surmountable”

Remembering Shomadi`s outstanding talents in Dance together with her contemporary Asha Chakraborty who had played lead roles in many Dance Dramma and cultural activities of the school and Bengali society of Bombay during their school days, brought back the memories of  our School`s cultural functions. The excellent artistries displayed by the tallest ever dancer duos of the 1951-54 era viz. M/s Protima Dutta and Meera Chatterjee (Banerjee ) helped  raising funds for the construction of our Secondary School Building by performing Tagore`s dance dramma  “Chandalika" at the Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan.  The photos of their memorable performances adorned the walls of the School building’s  corridors for many decades, reminding the future generations  of the glorious cultural traditions of this institution!

And so who else could have fit the bill  but Meeradi to prsent the bouquet to Shomadi? Meeradi  displayed her appreciation and affection by hugging Shomadi which was applauded by all those present.

Next it was poetry time. Ashok, from Advertising world took time off

to write a few books and also write a number of Poems on subjects close to his heart. Ashok's rendition of some of the poems in Hindi and English composed by him drew a great applause and wah..wah..from the appreciating audience.

In such Reunion functions, the emotions run very high and participants` mind's become heavy with nostalgic feelings . To be a part of such events, some of us came from  across the continents and far off places in the country. In this context we proudly mentioned the names of Sri  Venk Shenoy ( 1956 batch ) and Smt. Sarbani Roy Chowdhury ( 1964 batch ) who traveled all the way from UK and USA respectively just to be here for the occasion.

Sri Shenoy expressed his deepest appreciation for the progress made by the School and thanked the ALUMNIBES organizers for their efforts in re-kindling our love and reminding us of our solemn duties towards our Alma Mater!

Sarbani could not check her tears of joy in being a part of such a memorable event and wished our beloved teacher Nalinadi a long and happy life .

The program came to an end with the departure of Smt.Nalinadi who was accorded  the Guard of honor befitting her stature and dignity!

The tasty and warm dinner was  appreciated by every one and provided yet another moment for every one to meet, greet, promises to be in regular touch, appreciate the need for such events and with suggestions to attract future participations and course of action.

Mrs. Sheela Roy proposed the vote of thanks  in an informal way during the dinner, which was well appreciated !

REUNION 2006

28 th January 2006 ….. 18-00 hrs …. Place : B.E.S. High School, Dadar. There were about  125 chairs neatly lined up and in front 2 tables were covered with white cloth cover with two mikes at dais.

At the entrance, there were 2 tables where registration was in progress and Prodyot, Sheeladi, Bibek Bagchi ,and a few ex students had just gathered… with nervous expectations … will all the people come ? Did every one receive the invitation ? The traffic jams should not be the villain once again….  ( these were the thoughts in our minds ).

And soon the floods started… ex-students started arriving in small batches and what a thrilling moment… every one meeting others after a long long time ( decades ) and recognition was indeed difficult…

Dileep found one of his old childhood friends and hugged him crying Hi Deepak! To this Mr. Bhattacharya  reacted with murmur …. 'Are you Ranajeet Lodh ? You have become fatter than what we last saw you in schooldays!'  When Dileep told him that he was Dileep and the sobre  person standing next to him was Mr. Lodh  … Deepak was aghast! How every ones` appearances have changed with time!!! This experience was happening all over the hall… old friends meeting and hugging and exchanging old sayings/jokes and memorable moments/events. At 18-45 hrs. the hall was moderately filled with some 40 members and the meeting was called to order. Dileep welcomed the participants and briefed all about 75 glorious years of our school`s enviable history. Very rich tributes were paid to the founding fathers of the society viz. S/Shree Biren Sen, Jagadish Chandra Moitra, Shib Chandra Banerjee, Smt.Kalyani Bhattacharya, Smt. B.N.Sen, Shri S.C.Mukherjee, Dr. S.K.Bose and along with these visionaries, the services and efforts of all the selfless and dedicated members of the various Managing Committees thru the long 75 years were placed on record with great appreciation and heartiest reverence. Beloved and revered Teachers and staff were also remembered … starting with Principal J.C.Bhattacharya, Smt. Biva Sen, Principal Shri Gukul Chandra Pain, Deb maste, Sri Jogendranath Bhattacharya ( Pandit sir ), Sri Abony Roy ( Science Sir ), Smt. Rama Gupta, Sri P.Roy ( Hindi Sir ), Sri Ranen Dasgupta ( Dasgupta da ), Smt. Gauri Sen ( Head Mistress ), Smt. Renu Choudhury, Smt. Noor jahan Dutta, Smt Leena Bardhan, Smt. Nalina Nayak, Shefalidi, Rekhadi, to recent teachers viz.Raj lakshmidi and Sheeladi and many other dedicated teachers who devoted and spent all their efforts in cultivation of the minds of the students over past 75 years !

Lifelong contributions of the staff members like Maali ( Shinde ), Shantaram and Haripada  were also acknowledged on this solemn occasion.

The history and efforts of the ex-students associations formed earlier under the banner of PRAKTANI   with office bearers such as S/Sri Kamal Basak, Ashim Banerjee, Smt. Sibarani Chakraborty ( Jollydi ), Binapani Chakraborty, Chitra Chatterjee and in the second formation with Dr. Jayanta Banerjee, Bimal Basak, Pradeep Chatterjee, Bimal Deb, Mrinal Dutta were remembered and their untiring devotions and contributions were high lighted.

The need for Alumnibes to resurface at this period of time was spelt out and our dreams of making the school upgrade from its present stage to a multi discipline faculty up to the Graduate/post graduate levels were pronounced.

By now the attendance had picked up to nearly 80 and the hall looked very colorful with young ladies and  the mood turned festive.

The gracious and dignified Sheeladi informed the audience about the present state of affairs in our school and narrated the tough times faced earlier due to severe financial crunch and how the Shibnath Chakraborty led management steered the ship thru troubled times and brought it to  safety. She suggested that our school`s future expansion plans could be carried out in another area by acquiring land and constructing new facilities. However to achieve such a dream, we all need to work unitedly and extremely  hard and with total dedication. The entire gathering greeted these suggestions with approval and applause. Rubbishing the fear of Bengali Language being discarded, she suggested that we can attempt to introduce teaching Bengali in more schools where there are students desirous of learning the language! She greeted the festive crowd and cried that the pleasure and happiness of meeting old and long lost friends is unfathomable and we should have many more such occasions.

Dileep initiated the second session of Honoring the achievers by informing the gathering and paying  richest tributes to the nightingale of Indian Film music Late Smt. Geeta Roy  ( Dutt ) who was our ex-student in the early fifties and then invited the Senior most Alumni present that evening Sri A.Chatterjee ( 1953 batch ) to offer Flower Bouquet to the Queen of  Ghazals Ms.Chhaya Ganguly. Chayya was overwhelmed and happily shared the task of introducing and honoring the other ex-students who have distinguished themselves in the Music world of Bombay. Jolly Mukherjee ( the Chubbiest kid ever to study in our school during early sixties) was felicitated by Chhahya for his achievements in Film music /TV ; and Jolly fondly remembered how he got motivated and inspired during his school days. Sabyasachi Deb ( younger brother of the Deb sisters Monjushree and Geetashree ) who has created ripples in the field of Drama in Bombay was also felicitated by his class mate Chhaya. Sabyasachi acknowledged the role played by various seniors and teachers in shaping his interest in this art and thanked the school for also providing the platform for development of cultural activities.

Moving on to field of literature, the glorious heights in journalism  reached by Shoma ( Ganguly ) Chatterjee were read out and her sister Aneeja informed the house about the TWO President`s medals received by Shomadi and more than 25 books written and published on a wide variety of subjects which have brought laurels to her from all the National and Inter National Fora. Dileep proudly announced that during the next Annual Alumnibes REUNION scheduled for the 1st week of January 2007, Shomadi will be felicitated and requested her brother Anando and sister Aneeja to inform her in advance so as to keep herself free to be present for the occasion!

Rich tributes were paid to Ashok Roy for his Pioneering  achievements in the Advertisement world  and  his book Music Makers which have created waves in the cultural atmosphere of our country. On his part Ashok Roy recalled he was named as KABI during the 11th std. farewell function and justified the same by reciting a Hindi poetry composed by him specially for this occasion. Shri Binoy Dhar ( brother of Basana, Monju and Shyama Prasad… 1953 batch ) presented the flower bouquet to Ashok and wished him many more achievements to crown his outstanding career.

Sucharita Sarkar  was mentioned for her outstanding work in translating Bimal Mitra`s  Saheb Bibi Golam in English  which was co-authored by her along with her father and has since  received tremendous popularity and critics` acclaims. Dileep  made a personal request to her to consider translating Bimal Mitra`s immortal classic Kori Diye Kinlaam  in the near future to benefit the English readers with the history of step by step account of the development of the city of Kolkata!

Anjonavo Dutta `s critical comments and remarks during the meeting had reminded all about his talent and wits and when he was invited to the dais for felicitation for his painstaking efforts in researching, collecting and translating the idioms of various Indian languages into ‘Bangla Chanda’ in his maiden book Saat Paak`er Satero Fankra. Our Chhaya came yet again and praised Anjonavo for his talent and efforts in Music Composition reminding every one that “Gana to har koi sikh kar gaa sakta hain, lekin Kalakaar wo hi banta hain jinke dil me dard ka ahsaas ho.”

Anjonavo was clearly over-whelmed at such gesture by the ex-students and enquired if he could contribute anything for the good and noble cause of the school through the Alumnibes. Dileep concluded this second session of honoring the achievers by quoting from Bimal Mitra`s Kori Diye Kinlaam `s last chapter “ Amader anek e anek oonchu o sanmaan janak shikhar e pouche che ; kintu sab cheye baro katha holo ei je  amra ei school er theke sikkha peye sabaai MAANUSH hote perechi.”

The final session was perhaps the most enjoyable and entertaining of the evening. Dileep invited every one present in the hall according to their year of passing out and asked them to introduce and express their feelings. From 1953 batch ( 4 members ) to 2000 batch ,every one expressed their satisfaction and happiness in participating in such an event and requested that such events` frequency should be increased and our Alma Mater`s  future growth and expansion shall be most desirable in every one`s minds.

Young Sanjeev ( 2000 batch  )  while praising the efforts of seniors ;opined that this forum could also offer career guidance to the young members and this was very well received.

In the vote of thanks Partha Bose thanked all our sponsors ( many of whom could not attent the function ) who contributed liberally to make the event a grand success. All the Alumni were thanked for having made to this evenings memorable program and for their active and enthusiastic participation. Our honoured Alumni Ms Chhaya Ganguli, Anjanabha Dutta and Ashok Roy who were felicitated on this grand occasion for their respective achievements were also mentioned. Our host for the evening Dileep Chatterjee was profusely thanked for having broken the ‘distance barrier’ by arriving from Hyderabad specially for this grand occasion for carrying the evenings program on his shoulder and enthralling the audience in his own inimitable style.

Dinner organised by Sudevi Karmakar and Prodyot Nandy was simply SUPERB and every one enjoyed the dinner amidst Sheeladi`s  reminding Dasguptada`s slogan “ Khachho kemon  ?....... Bhalo ….. ( louder please )  Khachho kemon  ?...... B h a l o…

( aaro jor e )  Khachho Kemon ? …….    B……h…..a….l…..o…..

The dinner was over but not the evening as many utilized this time to go round and meet every one and promises to meet, contact and see each others regularly from now on. It was good bye then till we meet again!

REUNION 2005

At last a humble beginning has been made!

We have been thinking of having it for past few years. Shri Bibek Bagchi and Shri Abeer Dey took the initiative of arranging first Reunion of Alumnibes at Hotel Shantidoot on 27.11.2005.between 10 AM and 1 PM, and also contacting as many ex-students as possible. Thirty eight  Ex-students could make it to the venue. Though a sincere attempt was made to call as many ex-students as possible, some members could not attend due to prior social engagements.  Perhaps Sunday morning was too engaging for housewives to spare the time necessary for the reunion! All the same there was good interaction between the participants. Shri Bibek Bagchi welcomed the gathering. Quite a few number of ex-students made their feelings known to the gathering. A important suggestion was to hold the next  Reunion at the Bengali School itself, so that the ex-students can have a look and feel of the school as it exists today. There was suggestion of  forming a executive committee of Alumnibes which will chart out the  plan of action which can be incorporated by ex-students for the betterment of school. An important issue which needed to be addressed was the Life Membership issue of Bengali Education Society.  Ex-students who are not Life Members of Bengali Education Society signed a letter to be sent to Managing Committee to know the details of Life Membership. Incidentally the Managing Committee has been dragging its feet on this issue for the past one year for the reason best known to them. Also it was suggested to incorporate the photographs of  ex-students in the Alumnibes database page. This would be only possible with the cooperation of ex-students if they send photograph by email or via post. Members across the board promised to extend their helping hand toward  achieving the Alumnibes goals. There was overwhelming desire to have this type of Reunion every two / three months. With the consent of the members it was decided next reunion will be held on Saturday 28.1.2006 at BES High School Hall. Mrs. Shila Roy undertook the task of arranging for the Hall. A suggestion was made for financing the subsequent Reunions by sponsorship of Rs.1000/- each. There was a good response for the same from the members. To make the Second Reunion, an event which we look forward to, it is hoped that the event will be given adequate publicity by informing large number of  ex-students.

Individual contributions received per participant was Rs.150/-
